O incêndio que teve início a 14 de agosto no concelho da Ribeira Brava encontra-se agora dominado e em fase de rescaldo. No terreno, mantêm-se cerca de 150 operacionais de diversos Corpos de Bombeiros da Região Autónoma da Madeira, dos Açores e da Força Operacional Conjunta (FOCON). Estes operacionais, equipados com ferramentas manuais, estão a realizar trabalhos de sapador e vigilância ativa, com o objetivo de evitar qualquer reacendimento.
O combate a este incêndio foi dificultado por condições meteorológicas adversas, incluindo temperaturas elevadas, vento forte e baixa humidade relativa. Durante os onze dias de combate, a Madeira esteve sob avisos meteorológicos laranja e amarelo devido ao calor extremo.
É importante destacar que não há registo de habitações consumidas pelas chamas, vítimas a lamentar, nem destruição de infraestruturas essenciais. Estamos cientes de que toda esta situação tem causado danos emocionais e, desde a primeira hora, tudo temos feito para mitigar os impactos desta situação.
No período em que ocorreu este combate cinco bombeiros necessitaram de assistência médica, devido a indisposição, mas todos já receberam alta e regressaram ao trabalho.
De 14 a 24 de agosto, cerca de 200 pessoas tiveram de abandonar temporariamente as suas casas por questões de segurança, mas já regressaram, com exceção dos residentes da Fajã das Galinhas. Esta situação está a ser avaliada pelo município de Câmara de Lobos em articulação com o governo regional e brevemente será encontrada uma solução mais segura para as 36 famílias afetadas.
Os meios aéreos desempenharam um papel crucial no combate às chamas, com o helicóptero H-35 a realizar um total de 327 descargas desde o início do incêndio. Os aviões Canadair também contribuíram significativamente, realizando 26 descargas nos dias 22 e 23 de agosto. As operações aéreas focaram-se principalmente nas áreas da Ponta do Sol e Pico Ruivo, ressalvamos que a eficácia dos meios aéreos foi maximizada graças ao trabalho coordenado dos operacionais no terreno.
Durante este período, foram mobilizados aproximadamente 1000 operacionais, em regime de rotatividade, e 268 veículos de apoio. A área afetada, segundo o sistema COPERNICUS, abrange cerca de 5000 hectares.
Expressamos o nosso profundo agradecimento a todos os que contribuíram para o combate a este incêndio, incluindo os bombeiros da RAM, a Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa, bombeiros dos Açores, FOCON, equipas helitransportadas do H-35, equipas dos aviões Canadair, IFCN, GNR, PSP, Comando Operacional da Madeira (COM), Empresa Horários do Funchal, bem como todas as empresas públicas e privadas, e cidadãos voluntários que disponibilizaram o seu apoio e recursos de múltiplas formas durante todo este período. O esforço conjunto e a dedicação de todos foram essenciais para controlar e combater este incêndio.

Fire Situation Update (24/08/2024 - 10:30 AM)
The fire that began on August 14th in the Ribeira Brava municipality is now under control and in the aftermath phase. Around 150 personnel from various fire departments of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the Azores, and the Joint Operational Force (FOCON) remain on the ground. These personnel, equipped with hand tools, are carrying out fire-fighting and active surveillance tasks to prevent any reignition.
The fight against this fire was hampered by adverse weather conditions, including high temperatures, strong winds, and low relative humidity. During the eleven days of firefighting, Madeira was under orange and yellow weather warnings due to extreme heat.
It is important to note that there are no reports of homes being consumed by the flames, no casualties, and no destruction of essential infrastructure. We are aware that this situation has caused emotional distress, and from the outset, we have done everything possible to mitigate the impacts.
During this period, five firefighters required medical assistance due to illness, but all have since been discharged and returned to work.
From August 14th to 24th, around 200 people had to temporarily leave their homes for safety reasons, but all have since returned, except for the residents of Fajã das Galinhas. This situation is being evaluated by the Câmara de Lobos municipality in coordination with the regional government, and a safer solution for the 36 affected families will soon be found.
Aerial resources played a crucial role in combating the flames, with the H-35 helicopter carrying out a total of 327 water drops since the start of the fire. The Canadair planes also made a significant contribution, performing 26 drops on August 22nd and 23rd. The aerial operations primarily focused on the areas of Ponta do Sol and Pico Ruivo, and it is important to note that the effectiveness of the aerial resources was maximized thanks to the coordinated work of the ground personnel.
During this period, approximately 1,000 personnel were mobilized on a rotational basis, along with 268 support vehicles. The affected area, according to the COPERNICUS system, covers about 5,000 hectares.
We express our deep gratitude to everyone who contributed to fighting this fire, including the firefighters of RAM, the Portuguese Red Cross, firefighters from the Azores, FOCON, the H-35 helitack teams, the Canadair crews, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Public Security Police (PSP), the Madeira Operational Command (COM), Empresa Horários do Funchal, as well as all public and private companies and volunteer citizens who offered their support and resources in various ways throughout this period. The collective effort and dedication of everyone involved were essential in controlling and combating this fire.
